What is chart recorder?

Chart recorder is an electromechanical device. It records electrical or mechanical input trends on a sheet of paper (chart). The chart recorder may record several inputs with different colored pens, either on bar or circle charts. Chart recorders may be entirely mechanical with a clockwork mechanism, electro-mechanical with a clockwork mechanism for driving the chart (with mechanical or pressure inputs), or entirely electronic with no mechanical parts at all (virtual chart recorders).
Chart recorders come in three main forms. Bar chart recorders have a long strip of paper that ejects from the recorder. Round chart recorders have a rotating paper tray that must be changed more often, but are more compact and fit behind closed glass. Roll chart recorders are similar to bar chart recorders except that the recorded data is stored on a circular reel and the unit is usually completely enclosed.
Chart recorder predates electronic data logger, which has replaced them in many applications.
Working principle of chart recorder
Paper charts are driven past the pen at a steady speed by a clockwork or electric drive mechanism. A common method is to use a miniature synchronous motor, which turns at a constant speed related to the frequency of the power supply; a gear train is used to drive the paper. Industrial bar graph recorders may have two-speed gear trains that can be used at higher speeds to make initial adjustments to the process or to track changes in the process. Medical and scientific recorders can be set to a variety of precisely controlled speeds.
An "X-Y" recorder drives a chart based on the value of another process signal. For example, a universal testing machine can plot the tension vs. length of a specimen. Depending on the particular recorder, either the paper chart is moved or the pen holder has two axes of motion. examples of X-Y recorders date back to the 18th century in the form of steam indicator charts, which were used to record the pressure and volume of steam engines.
History of chart recorder
Charles Babbage included a chart recorder in the dynamometer locomotive he built in 1838 or 1839. This is how he described it." A 1,000-foot-long roll of paper slowly unfolds on a long table ...... About a dozen pens are attached to a bridge across the middle of the table, each pen marking its own curve in a progressive or jumping manner ......" The paper advances to match the wheels of the railroad car, while the pens record time, the pull of the locomotive's trolley, and many other variables.
Part of Samuel Morse's telegraph system was an automatic recorder of coded dots and dashes, with a pen moved by an electromagnet engraved on a paper tape and propelled by a clockwork mechanism to advance the paper. In 1848-1850, John Locke used this registration system to improve the accuracy of astronomical observations of stars, providing more precise timing than previous methods. This method was also adopted by astronomers in other countries. William Thomson, 1st Baron Kelvin's 1858 siphon recorder was a sensitive instrument that provided a permanent record of telegraphic signals through a long underwater telegraph cable. These recorders came to be known as pen recorders, although the term later became part of law enforcement jargon, referring to the use of such recorders to record dialed telephone numbers.
On September 18, 1888, William Henry Bristol was granted a patent for a "pressure indicator and recorder." Bristol founded the Bristol Manufacturing Company in 1889. Bristol was acquired by Emerson Electric in March 2006 and continues to manufacture several different electro-mechanical chart recorders, as well as other instrumentation, measurement, and control products.
The first chart recorder for environmental monitoring was designed by American inventor J.C. Stevens while working for Leupold & Stevens in Portland, Oregon, and the design was patented in 1915. Chart recorders are still used in applications that require immediate visual feedback, where the user does not have the need, opportunity, or technical ability to download and view data on a computer, or where there is no electrical power available (e.g., in hazardous areas on oil rigs or in remote ecological studies). However, the cost and power requirements of data loggers continue to decrease, allowing them to increasingly replace chart recorders, even when battery power is the only option.
Temperature chart recorder

Temperature chart recorder features panel mounting and wall mounting. It has DIN-compatible housing, AC power, battery backup, controlled recording time, and temperature range. Excellent temperature chart recorders work well in both high-temperature ovens and sub-zero freezers.
Application of temperature chart recorder
Temperature chart recorder has been in many fields, especially in the direct requirements of real-time recording of the whole process of temperature and humidity changes in a wide range of applications, according to the recorder recorded changes in value response to storage, production, transport, and other processes of temperature and humidity changes, and through the professional PC analysis software for scientific and effective management, analysis, summarization.
A. Temperature chart recorder in the agricultural and food industry applications
Artificial climate, plastic greenhouse environment, the size of temperature, and humidity changes in value directly affect the growth of crops, especially the seedling stage of cash crops. Using an electronic temperature chart recorder, it will automatically record the temperature and humidity value, and through the PC intelligent analysis software to the recorded value in the form of graphic table output, convenient for the administrator to analyze management. It also has an alarm function, when the temperature and humidity exceed the set high and low limits, the alarm will respond automatically to remind the staff to adjust the temperature and humidity in the environment such as the greenhouse or nursery in time. The use of an electronic temperature chart recorder simplifies your work, will also save costs, and does not have too many human factors interference, is objective and true to reflect the recording process.
B. Temperature chart recorder in transportation industry applications
In the long-distance or ocean transportation process, the temperature and humidity in the warehouse are too high or too low will directly or indirectly affect the quality of the goods transported, especially when transporting frozen and refrigerated food is particularly important. The carrier and the shipper often difficult to dispute which party is responsible for the changes in the quality of the transported goods. To prevent such disputes, just put the electronic temperature chart recorder in the warehouse before transportation and turn on the record, read the temperature and humidity value of the warehouse during transportation after the goods arrive at the destination, PC software automatically generates JPG, TXT, Excel three kinds of graphic forms, the results are clear at a glance, of course, the responsibility is also clear. The electronic temperature chart recorder simplifies your work and does not interfere with excessive human factors, and objectively and truly reflects the recording process. To a certain extent, is also powerful evidence to resolve disputes in this area.
C. Temperature chart recorder in the food storage and transportation industry applications
In the process of food processing and storage, a timely grasp of the food in the environment whether there is in food safety conditions is very important. In the environment, the temperature and humidity exceeding the standard can directly lead to food spoilage. If too low or too high will also make the food taste worse and reduce quality. The electronic temperature chart recorder is designed to be lightweight and the size is comparable to the size of an adult's palm. The use of imported core original, to ensure that the recorded data: temperature: ± 0.5 ℃ accuracy, humidity: ± 3% RH accuracy. Using an electronic temperature chart recorder, it will automatically record the temperature and humidity values and output the recorded values in the form of a graphic table (JPG, TXT, Excel) through PC intelligent analysis software, which is convenient for the administrator to analyze and manage. And there is a self-contained alarm function, when the temperature and humidity exceed the set high and low limits, the alarm automatically responds to promptly remind staff to adjust the temperature and humidity in the food storage room or production workshop and other environments. The use of an electronic temperature chart recorder simplifies your work, will also save costs, and does not have too many human factors interference, is objective and true to reflect the recording process.
Pressure chart recorder
Pressure chart recorder can measure and record pressure data from 1 point to 16 points, the instrument has 259200 memory capacity for each channel, and all data can be recorded in the instrument and can be retrieved, displayed, and queried at any time, 1-16 channel data can be displayed on the same screen, split screen display, time graph, historical graph, etc. The instrument is equipped with RS232 communication and U disk communication as standard, all stored data can be transferred to a computer for processing and analysis by the data analysis software.
