What is electrical conductivity meter?

conductivity-meter
Electrical conductivity meter is a laboratory conductivity measurement instrument, which can measure the conductivity of general liquids, and can meet the needs of measuring the conductivity of high-purity water, is a multi-range instrument. In addition, the conductivity meter is a wide temperature range online water quality analysis instrument developed for medical multi-effect distilled water systems, condensate, heat exchange systems, industrial thermal cleaning of mechanical parts, industrial circulating water, and other high-end water quality management and automation control operating in higher temperature environments.

Application of electrical conductivity meter

electrical-conductivity-meter
Conductivity meter is mainly used in the fields of water quality monitoring, atmospheric monitoring, and the performance of electroplating solutions. The conductivity of water has a certain relationship with the number of inorganic acids, bases, and salts it contains. When their concentration is low, the conductivity increases with the increase in concentration, therefore, this indicator is often used to speculate the total concentration of ions or salt content in water to reflect the degree of purity of water and the control of production processes. In different types of water, due to the different concentrations of solid dissolved substances (TDS) in the water, the conductivity is also different.

Water quality monitoring
Conductivity is affected by the salt, inorganic acids, bases, etc. in the water, so the higher the conductivity, the side will reflect the concentration of these in the water will increase, you can understand the total concentration of ions in the water and salt content, to understand the purity of water quality and production process control, the TDS content in the water will be different conductivity.
Different types of water have different conductivity. The conductivity of fresh distilled water is 0.2-2μS/cm, but after being placed for some time, it increases to 2-4μS/cm due to the absorption of carbon dioxide; the conductivity of ultrapure water is less than 0.10/μS/cm; the conductivity of natural water is mostly between 50-500μS/cm, and mineralized water can reach 500 The conductivity of natural water is mostly between 50-500μS/cm, mineralized water is up to 500-1000μS/cm; the conductivity of industrial wastewater containing acid, alkali, and salt often exceeds 10,000μS/cm; the conductivity of seawater is about 30,000μS/cm. The conductivity of different concentrations of potassium chloride solutions (25°C) is listed in the table below. The conductivity of the solution is related to its temperature, the polarization phenomenon on the electrode, the electrode distribution capacitance, and other factors, the instrument is generally used to compensate or eliminate measures. Water samples should be measured as soon as possible after collection, such as containing coarse suspended matter, oil, and grease, interference with the determination should be filtered or extracted to remove.

Plating solution
Conductivity is an important parameter of plating solution, which can reduce the voltage in the plating bath and improve the dispersion ability of the plating solution, and the measurement of conductivity can reflect the good or bad conductivity of the plating solution.

Atmospheric monitoring
Conductivity meter is used in atmospheric monitoring mainly for atmospheric pollutants such as carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide, and various nitrogen oxides, through the gas absorption device, the gas through the absorption solution to see the changes in conductivity, monitoring the degree of pollution area exceeds the standard.

Electrical conductivity meter working principle

conductivity-probe
Conductivity tester is the ability of an object to conduct current, The principle of measuring conductivity meter is to put two parallel polar plates into the measured solution, add a certain potential (usually sinusoidal voltage) at the ends of the plates, and then measure the current flowing between the plates. According to Ohm's law, the conductivity (G) - the reciprocal of the resistance (R) - is determined by the conductor itself. Because the geometry of the conductivity cell affects the conductivity value, the standard measurement is expressed in terms of unit conductivity S/m (and commonly μS/cm) to compensate for differences caused by various electrode sizes. The unit conductivity (C) is simply the product of the measured conductivity (G) and the conductivity cell constant (L/A). Here L is the length of the liquid column between the two pole plates and A is the area of the pole plates. The conductivity of water has a relationship with the number of inorganic acids, bases, and salts it contains. When their concentration is low, the conductivity increases with increasing concentration, therefore, this indicator is often used to speculate the total concentration of ions in water or the amount of salt contained.

How to maintain electrical conductivity meter?

electrical-conductivity-tester
Electrical conductivity meter is a common instrument for measuring the conductivity of aqueous solutions in laboratories, where the electrode is the part of the conductivity meter that is in direct contact with the solution and is highly sensitive. Therefore electrodes need special storage and cleaning methods to avoid an impact on the measurement accuracy of the instrument.

Preparation of conductivity electrode
After using or storing the conductivity electrode for a long time, the electrode should be soaked in anhydrous ethanol for 1 minute, and then clean the conductivity electrode fully with deionized water.

Storage of conductivity electrode
Electrodes (not used for a long time) should be stored in a dry place. The electrode must be put (stored) in distilled water for several hours before use, and the electrode for frequent use can be put (stored) in distilled water.

Cleaning of conductivity electrodes
The electrode can be cleaned with warm water containing detergent to clean the organic component taint on the electrode, and also with alcohol.
Calcium and magnesium precipitates can be cleaned with 10% lemon acid.
Electrodes plated with platinum black can only be cleaned chemically, mechanical cleaning with a soft brush will destroy the plating (platinum black) plated on the electrode surface. Note: Some chemical cleaning methods may regenerate or damage the platinum black layer that is lightly contaminated.
Bright platinum electrodes can be cleaned mechanically with a soft brush. However, the surface of the electrode must not be scratched and the surface of the electrode must not be cleared with hard objects such as screwdrivers, even when mechanically cleaning with a soft brush, special attention is needed.

Electrical conductivity meter precautions

1. When using a conductivity meter to measure pure or ultrapure water, to avoid the drift of the measured value, it is recommended to use a sealed tank for flow measurement in a sealed state, such as the use of beaker sampling measurement will produce a large error.

2. The electrode plug holder should be protected from moisture, and the instrument should be placed in a dry environment to avoid leakage or measurement errors caused by water droplet splashing or moisture.

3. The electrode should be regularly calibrated with constant.

4. Because the temperature compensation system uses a fixed 2% temperature coefficient compensation, so the measurement of high-purity water is as far as possible using no compensation way to measure after checking the table.

5. Measuring electrode is a precision part, can not be decomposed, can not change the shape and size of the electrode, and can not be cleaned with strong acid, or alkali, so as not to change the electrode constant and affect the accuracy of the instrument measurement.

6. To ensure the accuracy of measurement, the electrode should be rinsed twice with distilled water (or deionized water) less than 0.5uS/cm before use (platinum black electrode must be soaked in distilled water for a while before use after being put dry for some time), and then rinsed three times with the tested sample before measurement.
