What is gas monitor?

oxygen-meter
Gas monitor is a detection tool used to detect the concentration of leaking gases. It belongs to an electronic type of instrumentation, mainly including portable gas detectors and fixed gas detectors, and so on. The gas detector mainly relies on gas sensors to detect the concentration of various gases and is widely used in various industries.

Gas monitor is one of the most commonly used detection instruments in industrial production, it can detect the concentration of toxic and hazardous substances in our work, the use of gas detectors can detect the type of gas present in the environment, according to its detection results to use the appropriate safety equipment.

When using a gas monitor, you must be aware of the environment in which it is used. Many factors can affect the results of a gas detector, such as changes in humidity and temperature. Temperature changes can affect the amount of oxygen in the atmosphere. If the temperature fluctuations in the operating space, the results of the gas detector detection may drift, in such a situation, we should be the gas detector for on-site zero calibration, which can minimize the impact of temperature on the gas detector detection results. If the air humidity in the operating space increases, the water vapor in the air will drive out the oxygen, resulting in oxygen readings may cause a drop, this effect will not be immediately detected, but after a few hours will slowly affect the degree of oxygen, affecting the detection results. So we should pay attention to the temperature and humidity of the air in the operational air when testing the air to make adjustments to the detector.

How to choose a gas monitor?

Gas detector

In some places where dangerous gases are often produced, gas detection is required from time to time because gas leakage may threaten personal safety and affect laboratory safety and production. Here are some factors that affect gas monitors for your reference.

Confirm the type and concentration range of the gas to be detected

The types of gases encountered in each production department are different. When choosing a gas monitor, it is important to consider all possible scenarios. If methane and other less toxic alkanes are predominant, choosing an LEL detector is undoubtedly the most appropriate. This is not only because the LEL detector principle is simple and widely used, but it also has the characteristics of easy maintenance and calibration. If the presence of carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulfide, and other toxic gases, it is necessary to give priority to a specific gas detector to ensure the safety of workers. If more organic toxic and harmful gases, taking into account their low concentrations that may cause poisoning of personnel, such as aromatic hydrocarbons, halogenated hydrocarbons, ammonia (amines), ethers, alcohols, lipids, etc., you should choose a photoionization detector, and never use LEL detectors to cope, because it may lead to casualties.

Identify testing needs

When choosing a gas detector, it is important to specify what gases are being detected. In what environment to use? Does it need to be portable or fixed? and other incidental features. The analysis here focuses on two aspects: the different industrial environments and the confinement and openness of the environment.
A. If the operating environment is different, the choice of gas detector type is also different.
a. Fixed gas detector
Fixed gas detectors are mainly used in industrial installations and production processes. It can be installed at specific detection points for the detection of specific gas leaks. Its detection principle is more suitable for fixed detection's continuous, long-time stability. Care should be taken to select according to the type and concentration of the gas on site.
b. Portable gas detector
The portable gas detector is easy to operate and compact enough to carry to different production sites, with on-screen prompts and a step-by-step index that guides the user through operation, setup, and field calibration.
B. Gas detection is also considered in terms of the confinement and openness of the environment.
a. Confined spaces
In confined spaces, such as reaction tanks, sewers or other underground pipelines, underground facilities, tunnels, and other workplaces, it is necessary to test before personnel enter and to do so outside the confined space. In this case, choosing a multi-gas detector with a built-in sampling pump is necessary. Because the gas distribution and gas types in different parts of the confined space (top, middle, and bottom) are very different, only then can we ensure the safety of the staff entering the confined space.
b. Open spaces
In open spaces, such as open workshops, portable gas detectors can be used on the go. This is because it can display the concentration of toxic gases in the field continuously, in real-time, and accurately. Also, it needs to be equipped with a vibration function to avoid inaudible audible alarms in a noisy environment, and a data reading and storage function to record peaks, etc., to provide specific guidance for worker health and safety.

Understand the operating environment

All types of gas monitors have strict requirements for the site environment. Generally, the temperature requirement is -20~60℃, humidity requirement is 0-95%RH, pressure requirement is 80-120Kpa, etc. Even dust and flow rates have strict requirements. Other impurities in the environment can have a huge impact on the detection results, leading to unforeseen losses. Therefore, in the purchase of gas detectors, to make a clearer description of the working conditions of the use of the environment, in order to facilitate manufacturers to provide the appropriate program to solve.

Understand site safety

In general, the site where the gas monitor is installed and used has mandatory requirements such as being explosion-proof. The coal, petroleum, and chemical industries have very strict requirements for explosion-proof, requiring the instrument itself to be explosion-proof while carrying explosion-proof certification. Other environments may require the gas detector to have environmental certification or measurement apparatus license and other documents.

Understand the functional requirements of use

The general function of the gas monitor is to detect the gas concentration, exceed the standard alarm, etc. But users not only need these functions but also need to have the signal output, current output, digital signal output, voltage output and switch output, and other functions. There may be some other special requirements such as network interface and wireless signal, etc. Also, data logging and processing are more common requirements. All of these specific functional requirements need to be fully considered when selecting a gas detector.

Use of gas monitor

a. Safety confirmation must be carried out before entering the operation area. After the appropriate safety protection, such as mask, gas mask, etc. (depending on the specific use of the scene). Ensure the safety of test personnel to prevent safety hazards and ensure that there are no problems before entering the work area. When the gas detector alarms, evacuate the work surface in time and save the detection data. Forced ventilation for more than half an hour before the second measurement and test. The inspector must write the workplace test results on the confirmation sheet and must take full responsibility for the accuracy of the test data.

b. After inspection, confirm that the warning sign is flipped as required. The warning sign should be hung in a reliable position at the entrance of the work site, and other personnel should not flip the warning sign to avoid being affected by other reasons; workers should see the green surface before entering the work site. The duty team leader supervises and inspects the work of the duty inspector to ensure the effective implementation of the Regulations.

c. The portable gas detector probe is placed in the environment to be measured. When the gas to be measured leaks, the concentration value display value increases. When the alarm setting value is exceeded, the alarm indicator lights up and the alarm sounds. When the probe is moved into the leak source, the value on the gas detection concentration display increases, and the reading is recorded.

d. When the portable gas detector battery is low, it means the battery is about to run out. You must promptly turn off the power and charge it with the charger for 10-14 hours.

e. Plug the power charger into an AC220V power outlet, plug the charging plug into the detector, turn on the power switch of the four-in-one gas detector and charge the detector. The green working light is on, and the battery indicator flashes and shows "--". After charging, turn off the power switch and unplug the charger.
