What is goniometer?

universal-goniometer
Goniometer refers to a device for measuring angular size, also known as an angle meter and protractor. Now it refers to the angle measurement system in wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy. It performs angular measurements with a rotating arm drive mechanism.

Feature of goniometer

a. High precision. Angle measuring accuracy can reach ±0.3 seconds.

b. Long life. The spindle adopts an air-floating structure, the accuracy is kept for a long time, never wears out, and has a long service life.

c. The reading system adopts the imported high-precision bit-phase encoder and its related technology.

d. The number of grating lines reaches 16300 lines/roundness.

e. The width of the marking line is 0.1чm, with high accuracy, and good stability.

f. The aiming system adopts the self-aligning instrument which detects the signal by the image sensor, with high accuracy.

Parameter of goniometer

Spindle accuracy±0.02чm

Crystal goniometer

A crystal goniometer is an instrument that measures the angle of a crystal’s face to study the geometry of a crystal. Commonly used goniometers are contact goniometers and reflection goniometers. The common contact goniometer is equivalent to a protractor with a small ruler and is suitable for measuring larger crystals with a low accuracy of 12°. There are two types of reflection goniometers: single- and double-ring reflection goniometers.

One circle reflection goniometer

One circle reflection goniometer is mainly composed of four parts: a horizontal circle, a light tube, a sight tube (telescope), and a button crystal table. It is suitable for measuring small crystals with a grain size of several millimeters and a smooth crystal surface according to the nature of the reflection of light from the crystal surface by using the optical system.

Two-circle reflection goniometer

The two-circle reflection goniometer has more upright circles than the single-circle reflection goniometer so that the crystal can rotate around two mutually perpendicular axes, which greatly simplifies the measurement procedure and is the main instrument for crystal measurement. The contact goniometer or single-ring reflection goniometer measures the angle between the normal of each two crystal faces, i.e. the face angle value. A double-loop goniometer measures the azimuthal and distance angle values of the group spherical coordinates of each crystal face.

Use of goniometer

Goniometer calibration procedure

a. Clean the positive polyhedral prism and the prism and prism constant temperature.

b. Adjust the instrument so that the instrument is in normal working condition and check the appearance, the instrument should be able to work smoothly and the brightness of the field of view of the reading device should be uniform. The switch twist should work reliably. The metal dial scale direction and the indicated value should be consistent.

c. Check the straightness and flatness of the working surface of the table with the self-aligning instrument.

d. Determination of the error of the value. Select the standard orthogonal prism and self-collimation instrument to do the standard, the prism with the aid of the axis fixed in the indexing head, the instrument dial is located in 0 ° position, adjust the multifaceted prism, so that its 0 ° working surface and self-collimation instrument alignment, reading in the indexing head reading device, and then turn the indexing head so that the dial is 30 ° - 60 ° - 330 ° position, each measured back to the maximum and minimum difference to determine the indicated value.

e. Check the parallelism and oblique circular runout of table with mandrel and micrometer.
