What is heat sealer?

Heat sealer is a machine used to seal products, packaging, and other thermoplastic materials for heat sealing. The machine can use materials with a uniform thermoplastic single layer or materials with multiple layers, at least one of which is thermoplastic. Heat sealing can join two similar materials together or dissimilar materials together, one of which has a thermoplastic layer.

Heat sealing refers to the process of sealing one thermoplastic using heat and pressure to another similar thermoplastic. The direct contact method of heat sealing utilizes a continuously heated mold or sealing strip to apply heat to a specific contact area or path to seal or weld thermoplastics together. Heat sealing is used in many applications including heat-sealing connectors, heat-activated adhesives, film media, plastic ports, or foil seals.

As the heat-sealing machine is a precision laboratory instrument, it is generally used for laboratory testing applications in enterprises and institutions such as package factories, food, pharmaceuticals, quality inspection institutes, research institutes, etc.

Working principle of heat sealer

The use of electric heating, high-frequency voltage, ultrasonic waves, and other external conditions, so that the plastic film seals part of the heat into a viscous flow state, and with a certain pressure, so that the two layers of film fusion into one, after cooling so that a certain strength and sealing performance can be maintained so that goods in the packaging, transportation, storage and consumption process can withstand a certain external force can be guaranteed so that the goods will not appear cracking, leakage, so that the purpose of protecting goods to achieve, this is the principle of heat sealer.

The heat sealer adopts the heat pressure sealing method, placing the specimen to be sealed between the upper and lower heat-sealing heads, and completing the sealing of the specimen under the pre-set temperature, pressure, and time. After repeated tests, it provides guidance for users to find the heat-sealing parameters. To ensure a fast, pressure setting, the heat-sealing machine slowly approaches and seals the adjacent specimen so that the short sealing time can be reproduced. The heat seal time setting can be set at any time. When the foot switch is pressed, the specimen is pressed and the sealing time is determined by the press time of the foot switch.

Application of heat sealer

Heat sealer is a laboratory instrument for food enterprises, pharmaceutical enterprises, daily chemical product enterprises, packaging, and raw material production enterprises. Its working conditions simulate the three elements of pressure, temperature and time in the packaging process of the packaging line. Another use is to conduct heat sealing tests on flexible packaging materials under set temperature, pressure and time, so as to find out the best heat-sealing process parameters of materials conveniently and quickly to meet the requirements of packaging and packaging material manufacturers on material heat sealing parameters.

The heat-sealing machine adopts the heat pressure sealing method to determine the heat-sealing temperature, heat-sealing time, heat-sealing pressure, and other parameters of plastic film substrate, flexible packaging composite film, coated paper, aluminum foil, and other heat-sealing composite films. According to the different heat-sealing performances of various materials and the difference in their sealing process parameters, the heat-sealing test indexes can be obtained through the standardized design and standardized operation of the heat-sealing instrument. Structure of heat sealer

The structure of heat sealer includes four parts: an air-driving system, a heat-sealing device, a temperature-regulating system, and a time-regulating system.
Air-driving systemThe air-driving system consists of a pressure gauge, a pressure adjustment handle, and an air cylinder. Pull the pressure-adjusting handle outward and turn it to the right to adjust the pressure upward and to the left to reduce the pressure. Press the handle in toward the host side after the pressure is set to lock the air pressure.
Heat-sealing deviceThe heat-sealing device consists of upper and lower heat-sealing knives. The upper sealing knife is directly connected to the air cylinder, and there is a heat insulation plate on the top of the upper sealing knife to prevent heat transfer to the cylinder, which helps to stabilize the temperature. The heat-sealing knife is made of aluminum with a heater in the center of the knife. The rear part of the heat-sealing knife is equipped with a temperature-measuring body. (The general order of sealing knives from left to right corresponds to the order of the temperature control table from top to bottom from left to right, the temperature control table is the temperature control table of lower knives)
Temperature-regulating systemThe temperature control table displays and regulates the temperature of the heat-sealing knife. The upper-temperature control table controls the temperature of the upper knife and the lower-temperature control table controls the temperature of the lower knife. The temperature setting range is 0-300 ℃. The temperature adjustment of the heat-sealing control table is described in the specific operation of the temperature control in the following chapters.
Time-regulating systemAdjusting the schedule can change the time of heat sealing. In the manual state, when the foot switch is pressed once, the heat-sealing knives are pressed together, and the heat-sealing time is determined by the schedule set, and when the time is reached, the upper and lower heat-sealing knives are separated from the pressed-together state. In the automatic state, the upper and lower heat-sealing knives of the heat-sealing instrument are sealed repeatedly and automatically according to the set time.

There are adjustment buttons on the panel of the time control table, and its specific operation is described in the operation of time control table in the following chapters. The large setting range of time is 0.01 s~99.99 h.

Use of heat sealer

a. Prepare the sample.

b. Use the pressure-adjusting handle to adjust the pressure of the heat-sealing knife, the specific operation is to pull out the pressure-adjusting handle outward, turn to the right to adjust the pressure higher, and turn to the left to reduce the pressure. After the pressure is set, press the handle into the host side to lock the air pressure. Pressure is usually set to 0.2 MPa-0.4 MPa.

c. Turn on the power switch.

d. Turn on the heating switch of the upper heat-sealing knife and lower heat-sealing knife.

e. Set the temperature controller and time controller.
Temperature controller settingsPress the temperature controller "SET" key for 0.5 seconds to make the PV window display "SO", press the ▼ key or ▲ key to change the value of the SV display window to the desired value, and then press the "SET" key. Press "SET" for 0.5 seconds to exit. For example, if the desired temperature is 145 ℃, press ▼ or ▲ make the SV display 145 and then press "SET" for 0.5 seconds, the instrument will automatically control the temperature to 145 ℃.
Time controller settingThe timing controller has five setting boxes, each setting box up and down having a button, respectively, for plus and minus, the third setting box adjustment for S, which is the decimal point, S before the integer, and S after the decimal. For example, 1.5 seconds can be set to 01S50. time is usually 0.4 to 1 second.
f. Wait for about 10~30 min to make the temperature of heat-sealing knife stable.

g. Turn the auto/manual changeover switch to auto, then the heat sealer can heat seal the sample repeatedly according to the set heat sealing time, and when the sample is placed between the upper and lower heat-sealing knives, the knives will be pressed together automatically, and the sample will be taken out quickly after the knives are separated. If you turn the switch from auto/manual to manual, put the sample between the upper and lower heat-sealing knives, and step the foot switch once, the sample will be heat-sealed once.

h. Then the heat-sealed sample can be tested for its heat-seal strength according to the standard.

i. When the test is completed, turn off the power and compressed air.

Precautions for heat sealer

a. When you do not use the foot switch, unplug the connector.

b. Compressed air needs to be filtered and de-watered before entering the apparatus, and the air filter can be added separately (commonly known as a duplex, one for filtering air and de-watering, and the other one for oil lubrication cylinder). Air filter with water accumulation, the lower part of the filter will be lifted by the cork to drain the water.

c. When not heating the lower hot rod, the lower heating switch must be cut off.

d. Finger belly must be used when pressing the operation panel to prevent scratching the panel.

e. The cylinder cannot work smoothly when the pressure is below 1Kgf/㎡.

f. When replacing the heat sealing bar, it must be below 50℃.

g. When setting the cylinder pressure, do not exceed 0.4Mpa in general.

h. When there is a foreign substance adhering to the heat-sealing knife, use the wooden knife to remove it, do not use the blade to clean the dirt to prevent scratching the sealing knife.

i. The sealing knife prevents pinching when it is pressed together.
