What is ion meter?

Ion meter is an electrochemical analytical instrument used to measure the concentration of ions in a solution. The one that measures H+ also belongs to the ion meter, we generally call it a PH meter or acidity meter, and people refer to an ion meter as an electrochemical instrument that measures ions other than H+.

An ion meter is a device that measures specific ions in water using ion-selective electrodes. In most cases, ion meters can also simultaneously measure pH, mV, and temperature, as these additional functions are needed during ion measurements. In our ion meters, the molar mass and valence of the measured ion are automatically introduced after the selection of a specific ion. This allows calculations to be made in a choice of units, or one unit can be changed to another by automatic recalculation. Most meters have separate, isolated connectors and measurement circuits, which allow ion-selective electrodes and pH electrodes to be connected simultaneously with results that do not affect each other.

Due to the complexity of sample preparation and measurement methods, the use of ion meters for in situ measurements is not recommended. Ion selective electrodes are usually supplied as a set of 2 separate electrodes: the measurement electrode and the reference electrode, which are connected to separate connectors in the meter. Some electrodes can also be used as a combined unit - measuring and referencing electrodes in one housing.

Working principle of ion meter

Ion meter, also known as ion activity meter, can be used with various ion-selective electrodes to precisely determine the cell electric potential of the primary cell formed by the two electrodes. Depending on the application of the Nernst equation under different conditions, ion meters can be used to measure the ion concentration in a solution by the direct potential method, the addition method, the potentiometric titration method, and the Grignard plotting method.

The principle of ion meter to measure ion concentration is based on the potentiometric method, the essence of which is the method of analytical determination by measuring the potential difference between two electrodes (i.e., the electric potential of the primary cell hollowed out by the sample solution to be tested) under zero current conditions.

Ion meter must be used in conjunction with ion selective electrode, ion selective electrode is an electrochemical sensing element. It is an indicator electrode for measuring the activity of certain specific ions in solution by potentiometric method, which can convert the change of non-electric ion activity into the change of potential.

Factors to consider when selecting an ion meter


Application of ion meter

When buying an ion meter, users usually need to consider whether the device is used in the laboratory? Or is it for outdoor use? Is it used in a fixed location, or need to change location often, need to be easy to carry?

If it is used in a quiet environment in the laboratory, you can choose desktop ion meter; if you need to change location frequently, you can choose a portable ion meter. If it is used in the harsher outdoor environment, you may need to buy carry interference ability, with the waterproof and dustproof design of the ion meter.

Measurement requirements for ion meters

There are multiple different models of ion meters, with different technical parameters, different types of functions, and different numbers of solutions that can be identified, and different ranges and accuracies of measurement. Before purchasing, it is important to consider clearly: What solution is to be measured? How accurate does the data need to be? Use of ion meter

An ion meter usually costs several thousand dollars, and electrodes are in the hundreds of dollars. So how long is the approximate life of an ion meter? In fact, this is related to the use of ion meter environment and maintenance methods. Generally speaking, the electrode belongs to the consumable, but the ion meter host more durable, if properly maintained can be used for many years.

However, if improper use or do not pay attention to maintenance, will reduce the service life of the instrument. Notes on the use and maintenance of ion meters are as follows.

a. The instrument must be properly grounded when connected to the power supply. The condition can choose to be equipped with online two-way power supply with voltage stabilization and anti-interference with power failure protection to eliminate the adverse effects caused by unstable voltage and other reasons.

b. After the measurement is completed, the electrode should be immersed in distilled water. When the instrument is not in use, the short-circuit connector should also be connected to avoid damage to the instrument input open circuit. With two electrodes of the ion meter if in use only one of the two measuring electrode socket, the other needs to be connected to the short-circuit plug.

c. When measuring, the introduction line of the electrode should be kept stationary to avoid causing unstable measurement results.

d. If you find that the ion meter measurement is unstable during use, please check whether the instrument is properly grounded, check the level of the saturated solution of the reference electrode, and clean or polish the electrode leakage point of the reference electrode. If the electrode is damaged or contaminated, please replace the clean and intact electrode.

e. The electrode should not be immersed in protein solution, acidic fluoride solution for a long time and avoid contact with silicone oil. Clean the electrode in time after finding contamination. Electrode de-protein cleaning can use de-protein cleaning solution containing sodium hypochlorite, adjusting solution containing NH4, HF2 to Na, ++Cl, electrode has the effect of activation potential, soak with serum also cocoa to achieve the effect of activation.

f. Two electrodes of the same kind are used alternately (not used, shake off the inner filling liquid, store for a period of time to enhance the sensitivity of the electrode membrane), which can slow down the aging of the electrode.

g. The instrument should avoid contact with magnetic environments and should not be placed near objects with magnetic properties. Magnetic interference can lead to serious drift or disorder of the electrode cannot be used.

h. The calibration, test and reagent used by the ion meter, in principle, should use the original manufacturer's reagent, such as the use of non-original reagent should meet the manufacturer's requirements.

i. Instruments must be regularly calibrated and checked.
