What is rubber cement?

rubber-cement
Rubber cement is a class of neoprene, nitrile, butyl silicone rubber, polysulfide, and other synthetic rubber or natural rubber as the main material formulated into the adhesive. It has excellent elasticity, suitable for bonding soft or thermal expansion coefficient differences of the material.
Rubber glue, a common adhesive in life, is mainly used for bonding between plastics, etc.
Rubber solution glue is a synthetic adhesive made of synthetic rubber as a base material. The adhesive strength is not high, heat resistance is also poor, belongs to the non-structural adhesive, but has an excellent elasticity.

What is rubber cement used for?

rubber-cement-glue
Rubber cement glue is easy to use and has strong initial adhesion. Can be used for rubber, plastic, fabric, leather, wood, and other soft materials bonding, or metal - rubber and other thermal expansion coefficient difference between the two materials bonding, is machinery, transportation, construction, textile, plastic, rubber and other industrial sectors indispensable materials.
Besides, rubber cement is suitable for bonding soft materials or materials with different coefficients of thermal expansion, such as rubber and rubber, rubber and metal, plastic, leather, wood, and other materials. It has been widely used in aircraft manufacturing, automobile manufacturing, construction, light industry, rubber products processing, and other sectors.

Advantages of rubber cement

a. Most rubber cement is a room temperature curing contact type. After the surface is coated with rubber, it can be crystallized instantly after proper drying and then closed, so it has a large initial adhesive force.

b. Rubber cement glue has high adhesive strength and fast strength formation.

c. Rubber solutions to a variety of materials have good adhesion, so neoprene adhesive has a "universal glue", or "a hundred different glue" called.

d. Rubber cement thinner has good durability, excellent flame resistance, light resistance, ozone resistance, and atmospheric aging resistance.

e. Rubber solution glue is flexible, elastic, and shock resistant.

f. Rubber cement solvent has good medium resistance, and good resistance to oil, water, alkali, acid, and solvent.

g. Rubber cement glue can be prepared as a single component, is easy to use, and low cost.

Types of rubber cement

rubber-solution
There is non-vulcanized and vulcanized rubber cement. The former is made by mixing raw rubber with antioxidants (see Rubber Additives) and reinforcing agents (see Reinforcing Materials) and dissolving them in organic solvents. It is cheap and easy to use, but the heat and chemical media resistance are poor. The latter is the raw rubber and vulcanizing agent, accelerator, reinforcing agent, viscosity enhancer, and other matching agents after mixing, and then dissolved in organic solvents. Vulcanized synthetic rubber adhesives and room temperature vulcanization (such as silicone rubber sealant) and heating vulcanization (such as natural rubber adhesives for tire retreading) two. The room temperature vulcanized synthetic rubber adhesive manufacturing process is simple, with no heating equipment, saving energy, so the development of faster.
Rubber cement glue can be divided into solvent-based, latex, and solvent-free three categories according to the agent type. Solvent-based adhesives have good process performance, strong adhesion, and stable glue, but the solvent is flammable and toxic. Latex-type adhesives are non-flammable and non-toxic, but the process performance and adhesive performance are not as good as solvent-based adhesives. The solvent-free synthetic rubber adhesive is made of liquid rubber as the main raw material adhesive, itself is a viscous liquid, a chemical reaction can be cured into an elastomer, mainly used as a sealant, in recent years, the development of rapid.
Almost all rubber cement (or latex) can be used as adhesives, but their characteristics and applications vary. Neoprene adhesives are the largest producer of synthetic rubber adhesives, the most widely used varieties. Neoprene crystalline strong, high cohesion strength and good adhesive properties, by plastic refining, in turn, adding vulcanizing agent (such as zinc oxide), accelerator (such as ethylene thiourea), viscosity resin (such as Kumarone resin), antioxidants (such as naphthylamines) and fillers (such as calcium carbonate) and other matching agents for mixing, mixing film dissolved in solvent (such as toluene) that is neoprene adhesive. If you add acetylthiourea, polyisocyanate, and another strong accelerator, can be made into room temperature vulcanization neoprene adhesive, at room temperature can be quickly vulcanized. This adhesive is usually double packaging type (see synthetic adhesives), that is, the main rubber liquid and the vulcanization system containing strong accelerators are packaged and stored separately. Pure neoprene adhesive heat-resistant performance is not yet ideal, often adding tert-butyl phenolic resin (see phenolic resin) to modify the adhesive to improve the heat resistance and adhesion; also available methyl methacrylate graft neoprene to improve the bonding strength. Modified neoprene adhesives on metal bonding strength can be increased by 2 to 3 times, heat resistance is also significantly improved, at 100 ℃ also has sufficient bonding strength. Considering the pollution of organic solvents to the environment, the rapidly developing neoprene adhesive is directly in the emulsion polymerization product, adding a variety of matching agents and made of emulsion-type adhesives. Synthetic rubber adhesives
In addition to neoprene adhesives, there are oil-resistant nitrile rubber adhesives, solvent-resistant polysulfide rubber adhesives, adhesion better carboxyl rubber adhesives, acid and alkali-resistant chlorosulfonated polyethylene rubber adhesives, bonding difficult to stick materials such as polyisobutylene rubber adhesives have been more widely used. In the 80s, but also developed thermoplastic butadiene block rubber-based hot melt adhesives.

How to use rubber cement?

1. Before using the rubber cement bonding, the surface to be bonded for general cleaning treatment can be, require a higher working surface with ethanol as a cleaner surface wipe clean, bonding effect is better. This product mainly relies on the role of trace moisture in the air and curing. The adhesive layer cannot be too thick (generally one to two millimeters thick), cannot be used for surface bonding of large area objects, and cannot be used for deep infusion, not for structural bonding. It can be stored for one year at room temperature below 30 degrees.

2. Rubber glue can adhere to common metals (aluminum, copper, nickel, zinc, titanium alloy, ferrite, etc.) and various non-metallic materials (ceramics, glass, cement) and plastics (phenolic, unsaturated polyester, silicone, hard PVC, plexiglass, A.B.S, polystyrene glass), so it is suitable for sealing bonding between metals, non-metals, and between metals and non-metals. For example, it is used for bonding motorcycle magnets, sealing machine tools, etc.

3. The curing of rubber adhesive is to absorb the trace water in the air, so the adhesive can not be put into the oven immediately after coating, which not only can not accelerate the curing reflection but will also form many bubbles, air humidity affects the curing speed, in the northern winter climate dry, curing time is slower, in the southern summer climate humid, curing speed is faster, the general surface curing time is 15-30 minutes.

4. Rubber cement should be stored in a dry, light, and 320C below, the shelf life of one year, rubber is not yet used up, the rubber squeezed to the mouth of the tube cover tight, then stored without impact.

5. The rubber adhesive is non-toxic, non-corrosive, non-flammable, and non-dangerous. Appearance: white flowing.

Precautions for using rubber cement

Storage period
Each rubber cement product has a storage period. According to international standards and domestic standards, storage period means at room temperature (24℃). For acrylate adhesives, it is 20℃.
For acrylate products of rubber cement, the storage period is shorter if the temperature is higher.
Water-based products such as temperatures below - 1 ℃, directly affect the quality of products.

Strength
There is no universal adhesive in the world, for different stickies, it is best to use a special adhesive.
If the strength of the bonded object itself is low, then it is not necessary to choose high-strength products, otherwise, it will be big material and have small use, increasing the cost.
Can not only pay attention to the initial strength of high but should consider good durability.
High-temperature curing adhesive performance is much higher than room temperature curing, such as the requirement of high strength, and good durability, to use high-temperature curing adhesives.
For a cyanoacrylate adhesive (502 strong adhesives) in addition to emergency or small area repair and continuous production, the requirement for high bonding strength of the material, should not be used.
a. Do not wear knitting gloves to use rubber cement glue, instantaneous dry glue is absorbed by the knitting material of the gloves will quickly polymerization reaction, the reaction generated high heat, and will burn your hands, so please always remember, do not wear knitting gloves to use.

b. If the eyes accidentally contact, because after curing glue hard will hurt the eye, do not rub with your hands, and immediately rinse with a lot of water or warm towel hot compresses, so that the eyelids sweating natural separation, do not force to pull away, serious and sent to the doctor for emergency treatment; skin contact with warm soapy water, soaked in acetone, unglue agent to remove.

c. Instantaneous dry glue vapor is irritating, please keep ventilation in the workplace when using a lot.

d. When there is a large amount of leakage, it can be cured with water and then scraped off.
