What is vacuum pump?

Definition of vacuum pump

vacuu-pump
Vacuum pump is a device that uses mechanical, chemical, or physical methods to pump the pumped vessel to obtain a vacuum. Generally, vacuum pump is a device to improve, generate and maintain vacuum in a closed space by various methods and is one of the common equipment used in laboratories.

Vacuum pump applications

Vacuum pumps are used in a wide range of applications, such as metallurgy, chemical, food, pharmaceutical, and other industrial production and livelihood-related industries. In addition to industrial production and other fields, vacuum pumps are also widely used in various chemical and biological laboratories and other fields.

Advantages of using vacuum pump

Here are some advantages of using vacuum pump:
1. Vacuum pump structure is simple, manufacturing precision requirements are not high, easy to process. Simple operation and easy maintenance.

2. Compact structure, the pump is usually directly connected with the motor, and the rotation number is higher. With a smaller structure size, you can get a larger exhaust volume.

3. There is no metal friction surface in the pump cavity, no need to lubricate the pump.

4. The temperature change of compressed gas in the pump cavity is very small and can be considered isothermal compression, so it can pump out flammable and explosive gases.

5. Since there is no exhaust valve and friction surface, it can pump out dusty gas, condensable gas, and gas-water mixture.

Types of vacuum pump

The types of vacuum pump can be broadly divided into three categories:

Positive displacement pump

Positive displacement pump is a vacuum pump that uses periodic changes in the volume of the pump chamber to complete the suction and discharge process, where the gas is compressed before being discharged. Positive displacement pump is divided into two types which are rotary vane vacuum pump and reciprocating vacuum pump.

1. Rotary vane vacuum pump

It uses the rotating motion of the piston in the pump chamber to suck, compress and discharge the gas. Rotary vacuum pumps are also available in the following forms.
* Diaphragm vacuum pump
* Scroll vacuum pump
* Screw vacuum pump
* Wankel vacuum pump
* External vane vacuum pump

* Liquid ring vacuum pump

2. Reciprocating vacuum pump

Reciprocating vacuum pump uses the reciprocating motion of the piston in the pump chamber to suck in, compress and discharge the gas. Therefore, reciprocating vacuum pump is also known as piston vacuum pump.

Momentum transfer pump

Momentum transfer pumps rely on high-speed rotating vanes or high-speed jets to transfer momentum to the gas or gas molecules so that the gas is continuously transferred from the inlet to the outlet of the pump. Momentum transfer pumps are also available in the following forms.
* Diffusion pump
* Turbomolecular pump
* Scroll vacuum pump

Entrapment pump

vacuum-pump-oil
Entrapment pump is a vacuum pump in which gas molecules are adsorbed or condensed on the inner surface of the pump, thus reducing the number of gas molecules in the container and achieving the purpose of pumping. Entrapment pumps are also available in the following forms.
* Sorption pump
* Getter pump
* Titanium sublimation pump

How to use vacuum pump?

Improper use of vacuum pumps can cause irreversible damage to the machine, so we need to master the correct use of vacuum pumps and steps:
1. Mechanical vacuum pumps that require cooling water must pass through the cooling water before starting.

2. The pipeline of the continuous vacuum pump and pumping system should be as short and thick as possible. The inner diameter of pipeline should not be smaller than the diameter of vacuum pump entrance to avoid the influence of dry pipe resistance on pumping speed.

3. To keep the workplace clean and hygienic and benefit the health of personnel, use a leather hose to discharge the exhaust gas directly to the outdoor.

4. When the vacuum pump does not work for a long time or the ambient temperature is low, which may cause difficulty to start, the suction port of the vacuum pump should be opened to the atmosphere.

5. Check whether the oil of the mechanical vacuum pump can reach the oil channel on the window before use. Also, check the rotation direction of the motor pulley. The observer must face the pulley and the pulley must rotate clockwise. If it reverses, you can replace the two-phase connector on the power supply. Otherwise, the rotary vane vacuum pump will not pump air, but pump the oil and atmosphere in the vacuum pump into the pump system, causing serious pollution.

6. After the work is finished, close the high vacuum valve first, then close the low vacuum valve, then stop the rotary vane vacuum pump, and then bleed the air pump to prevent the oil backflow.

7. Pay attention to prevent hard objects (metal fragments, glass fragments, etc.) from falling into the vacuum pump and scratching the moving parts of the vacuum pump. When the vacuum pump is closed for a long time, it should be stored in a dry and clean environment, and block the suction and exhaust ports to prevent dust from entering.

Precautions for using vacuum pump

When using vacuum pumps, there are some safety points we need to pay attention to:
1. Pay attention to personal safety
In addition to operating the vacuum pump on-site, you should take some general precautions to ensure your health and personal safety in the working environment. Whether the machine is in operation or not, be sure to wear appropriate clothing. When performing maintenance on electric pumps, also make sure to wear insulated gloves and protective helmets.

2. Pay attention to ventilation
As we all know, vacuum pumps need to be ventilated to prevent the body from overheating. Therefore, pumps must be installed in locations that ensure adequate ventilation and prevent the risk of fire. This means that all pump types, except submersible pumps, must be installed at least three feet away from walls and other equipment. In addition, pump emissions contain CO, a toxic and odorless gas that is a byproduct of incomplete chemical reactions. Engines that normally use fuel release CO, so vacuum pumps can be a safety hazard in a completely enclosed space. Therefore, it is important to ensure that all vacuum pumping pumps are in open spaces with adequate ventilation.

3. Pay attention to overheating
Always check the suction screen to make sure it is not clogged to rule out safety problems with the vacuum pump and also to extend its life. Need to make sure the pump has enough airflow to cool the engine, however, some vacuum pumps tend to overheat from time to time even without any direct cause. What the operator must do in this case is to shut down the engine immediately and let the pump cool down. Direct contact with an overheated pump can result in severe burns or scalds, so it is important to stay away from the overheated pump until it cools to room temperature. Cooling time depends on the size and temperature of the pump, sometimes up to 2-3 hours. The drain plug should not be opened until the operator is sure the pump has cooled completely.

4. Pay attention to the type of vacuum pump
Different types of vacuum pumps have different safety hazards. Therefore, you must be clear about the specifics of the vacuum pump you are operating, operating precautions, etc. Especially for new employees, if you are unsure about any aspect, you should consult first to further confirm the vacuum pump type.
