It is indispensable to have centrifuge test tubes in the experiment of sample separation, stratification, or density gradient separation. You can find different kinds of centrifuge test tubes widely used in biology, clinical healthcare, chemistry, and other industrial applications.
By using special construction and good technology, centrifuge tubes can support the centrifugal force with a very high relative level (RCF). Some of the centrifugal tube can reach the level up to 20,000xg RCF.
A sturdy centrifuge test tube is usually used with a centrifuge machine. This application involves the technology which is called Centrifugation. Centrifugation is one of the most used methods in biotechnology laboratories for protein separation, enzymes, nucleic acids and cell subcomponents. This technology uses the powerful centrifugal force created by the high-speed object rotating to let some particles achieve concentration conditions or make them separated from other particles.
Given the wide application of this technology, it derived a variety of biotechnology laboratory-related products. Centrifuge Test Tube is one of the most frequently and widely used among them. This also leads to different classifications of centrifugal tubes.
Different centrifugal tubes are used in different experiments. They are subjected to different factors like machines, speed, test samples, and so on. At present, there are no materials that can meet all kinds of requirements of centrifuge experiments. Knowing the material of the centrifugal tube is very helpful to select suitable centrifugal tubes. The raw materials of centrifugal tubes are mainly divided into three types, plastic-made, glass-made, and made by stainless steel. In the lab, plastic-made and glass-made centrifuge test tubes are more commonly used than the stainless-steel type.
There are many kinds of raw materials when manufacturing plastic centrifuge test tubes. They are polypropylene (PP), polyamide (PA), polycarbonate (PC), Polyethylene (PE), Polyfluoride (PF), polystyrene (PS), and Cellulose Acetate Butyrate (CAB).
1) Plastic Material of Centrifuge Test Tubes – Polypropylene (PP)
* Semi-transparent
* Strong stability for chemical and temperature
* Temperature below 4℃
2) Plastic Material of Centrifuge Test Tubes – Polyamide (PA)
* Translucence
* Strong chemical stability
* Cannot use under high temperature
3) Plastic Material of Centrifuge Test Tubes – Polycarbonate (PC)
* Transparency
* High hardness and high-temperature resistance
* Strong acid / strong alkali/alcohol forbidden
4) Plastic Material of Centrifuge Test Tubes – Polyethylene (PE)
* Non-transparent
* Stability (have no reaction with hydrochloric acid, acetic acid, and acetone)
* Soft when used under high temperature
5) Plastic Material of Centrifuge Test Tubes – Polyfluoride (PF)
* Translucence
* Low-temperature application
* -140℃ to -100℃
6) Plastic Material of Centrifuge Test Tubes – Polystyrene (PS)
* Transparency
* High hardness
* Organic compounds corrode (disposable)
7) Plastic Material of Centrifuge Test Tubes – Cellulose Acetate Butyrate (CAB)
* Transparency
* Suitable for gradient determination with dilute acid, alkali, salt, alcohol, and sucrose
Centrifuge test tubes can also be manufactured from glass. The raw materials of glass included SiO2, H3BO3, NA2B4O7, 10H2O, CaO, glass cullet, P2O5, Na2O, and other oxidizing materials that included potassium, magnesium, zinc, aluminum, etc.
The best advantage of most glass centrifuge test tubes is that they have good chemical resistance which enables them to be used with tested samples like water, salt solutions, acids, bases, and organic solvents. From this point of view, glass-made centrifuge test tubes are more usable than most plastic-made centrifugal tubes. Only hydrofluoric acid and strong base or concentrated phosphoric acid will damage the glass under heating conditions.
Reusability, durability, strong stability, chemical resistance, thermal resistance, easy operation for low extractables, and high transparency all are the advantages of glass centrifuge test tubes. When using the glass centrifugal tube, please turn down the rotation speed as low as possible based on the requirements of the testing goal. Besides, the rubber pad should be used to avoid the breakage of it. Generally, because of the fragility of glass materials, glass centrifuge test tubes should not be used in high-speed or superfast speed centrifuges.
The capacity of centrifugal tubes usually ranges from a few milliliters to 100 milliliters. Based on it, centrifuge test tubes can be divided into large capacity centrifuge test tubes, small capacity centrifuge test tubes, and microcentrifuge test tubes.
Large capacity centrifuge test tubes are also called centrifuge vials or centrifuge bottles. Its capacity is usually from 250ml to 500ml.
Small capacity centrifuge test tubes, its popular capacity sizes are 15 ml and 50ml.
Microcentrifuge test tubes, usually in the capacity of 0.2ml, 0.65ml, 1.5ml, and 2ml. 1.5ml microcentrifuge test tubes are the most commonly used in laboratories.
Some centrifuge tubes are fitted with plastic lids to prevent leakage. Usually, the lids are designed to be threaded, plug–sealed, or push-in. Microcentrifuge test tubes are often with snap caps. Threaded lids are often used with large capacity centrifuge test tubes or centrifuge bottles. Plastic centrifugal tubes are provided with a lid generally.
Due to different demands, there are a variety of shapes and styles for centrifuge test tubes.
The round base is designed for the general-purpose application program.
The conical base is designed to make it easier to extract samples or particles after centrifugation.
The flat base is very convenient when used for it can be put and take easy when experimental operating.
Among these bottoms of centrifuge test tubes, the conical tube is the most widely applied in laboratories, especially the graduated conical centrifuge test tubes. In order to better operate and observe the samples in centrifuge test tubes, it is suggested to be used with a centrifugal tube holder.
* According to the rotation speed, the centrifuge test tubes can be divided into low-speed centrifugal tubes and high-speed centrifugal tubes.
* According to the shape of the mouth of the centrifugal tube, it can be divided into narrow mouth centrifugal tubes and straight mouth centrifugal tubes.
* According to the method of application of the centrifuge test tubes, it can be divided into preparation type centrifugal tubes and analysis type centrifugal tubes.
